(More customer reviews)My mom always had a canister vacuum, so when I bought a house with wall-to-wall carpeting in 1985, I bought a canister style also.My first one was a Eureka.It did not have a retractable cord, which was annoying, and it did not have a way to keep tools on board.I had the belts replace twice.In 1998, my girlfriend moved in with her Electrolux, so the Eureka went to Goodwill.The Electrolux was a monster: very heavy and old fashioned (1950s model).No retractable cord, no tools on board.I could's wait to get rid of it.Then one day she came home with a new Electrolux.It looked just like the old:bullet shaped, which made it a pain in the neck to drag around, and no way to keep the tools on board.And no retractable cord.Such are the little irratations of married life.Then last year our cleaning woman said her vacuum had broken and she would like to buy ours.We sold her the Electrolux for $200 - a good deal for her because it cleaned great - and ran out to Sears to buy a Kenmore.We got this one because of the adjustable wand length (a feature we have not used) and the the pet hair attachment.We are not sorry.I have the sense that the Electrox cleaned the carpets slightly better, but I don't see a difference.It works great:no high pitched whine as reported by another reviewer, retractable cord, and tools on board.Also, the design makes it easy to store.The tank stands on end in the closed, and the rotar head and wand can easily adjust to be almost flat to fit into a small space (it won't stand up like that on it's own, though).The hose is exceptionally long, which is a nice convenience.I have not used the pet hair attachment yet.I had no trouble assembling it.One word of caution though.It is time for a new bag, and this machine takes type Q, which does not seem to be available by mail order from Amazon,Sears or Kenmore websites.I think you have to live near a Sears store to get the bags.
